The “Chemistry Connects: Exploring Scientific & Career Pathways with Leading Minds” event was held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet on 20 February 2025. The event brought together esteemed academics, industry leaders and aspiring students to explore diverse career opportunities for Chemistry graduates.

Among the distinguished speakers was Syed Shahadat Hossain, Environmental Analyst at Indetechs Software Ltd., who delivered an insightful talk on career progression beyond traditional laboratory roles. We spoke with Syed Shahadat Hossain about his experience at the event.

From Lab to Leadership: A New Career Horizon

In his session, "From Lab to Leadership: Career Paths for Chemistry Graduates", Syed Shahadat Hossain shared his professional journey and growth at Indetechs Software Ltd. He highlighted how chemistry graduates can transition into emerging fields such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), sustainability analytics and environmental impact modelling, where scientific expertise and digital technologies come together.

As the only speaker representing the software industry among the 12 guest speakers, Syed Shahadat Hossain emphasised the growing demand for environmental analysis and sustainability solutions within the technology sector. He also introduced Indetechs Software Ltd., highlighting the company's expertise in developing software-driven sustainability solutions that help organisations improve environmental performance and transparency.

Bridging the Gap: Chemistry and Software Careers

The event attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty members and senior university officials, including the Vice-Chancellors of SUST, Sunamgonj Science and Technology University and Metropolitan University, Sylhet, along with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Treasurer, Proctor, Provost and senior faculty members from SUST's Department of Chemistry.

A major takeaway from the session was the growing curiosity among students about career opportunities in the software industry for chemistry graduates.

Syed Shahadat Hossain reflected:

"It was beyond their imagination, working in a software company as a chemistry graduate. Many students were excited by the idea of applying their expertise in a technology-driven environment, breaking the conventional notion that chemistry careers are limited to academia or laboratory-based roles. It opened new horizons for their potential career paths."

The event also sparked interest among senior faculty members from SUST's Department of Chemistry in Indetechs Software Ltd.'s work. As Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) forms an important part of the Environmental Chemistry Master's programme, discussions around potential collaboration between academia and industry have begun to emerge.

Audience Engagement and Thought-Provoking Discussions

The event featured three key segments:

  • Scientific Seminar

  • Career Path Trends, featuring Syed Shahadat Hossain's presentation

  • Departmental Get-Together, providing an informal networking opportunity

During the networking session, more than 20 spontaneous speeches focused on career opportunities in the software industry for chemistry graduates.

Syed Shahadat Hossain's presentation generated significant interest in Indetechs Software Ltd., with many attendees eager to learn more about the company's work in sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment and environmental transparency.

A New Path for Chemistry Graduates

The overwhelmingly positive response from students and faculty at Chemistry Connects 2025 reflected a changing perspective. More chemistry graduates are beginning to recognise opportunities in technology-driven sustainability fields where their scientific knowledge can make a meaningful impact.

As organisations increasingly rely on data-driven environmental solutions and sustainability reporting, interdisciplinary careers that combine chemistry with software and digital technologies are becoming more valuable than ever.

With growing interest from academia and opportunities for future collaboration, Indetechs Software Ltd. continues to demonstrate how scientific expertise can be transformed into practical digital solutions that support a more sustainable future.
